Motorcycles go Green

Monday, May 12th, 2008

I found this article from Wired.com quite a coincidence as I’ll be taking a motorcycle class/lesson at the end of the month. Motorcycles as it is are better on fuel consumption than your typical car, but to make them electric is an even larger improvement, though I’m sure it would be more difficult to get that ‘thrill’ of riding fast on a bike when it’s electric. Anyways, some interesting concepts here.

trendy food goes green

Friday, April 25th, 2008

Last night my chef-cousin, took me out for a belated birthday at a new restaurant called Achilles-Project/Persephone. The concept is quite interesting, trendy food and atmosphere that’s eco-conscious combined with a retail environment. Who would have thought? Plus video games. What more does one need? Food. Fun. Shopping.

Above image: sliding concept- tables push together or separate to accommodate small and large parties. This sliding concept carries through other aspects: clothes racks slide on ceiling tracks to make room for video game playing and sliding chalk board covers the window between the kitchen and dining room. Subtle and well thought out.

Now, onto the food. Great, simple presentation. Elegant. On the other hand, I was not blown away by the food itself. Lumiere in Newton (run by the same chef) was much better.
Weird food: I love trying. Below is the “beef bone-marrow”. I’ve only ever had it before in Chinese soup. This time around was not expected- too much salt and butter with the consistency of bone-marrow (which is like mushy-fat…yum) was not too yum, as it felt like we were actually eating fat.

Perhaps I’m being a bit harsh. We did have a good experience and I would certainly go back for the interesting cocktails and atmosphere rather than for the pure food experience.

story of stuff

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

Everyone should take a look at this site, storyofstuff.com. A great, simple way of exploring and explaining how we are all affecting and being affected by the consumer world we live in. Where does all this ’stuff’ come from? and how does it get here? Where does it go?

Really, how is it that we’ve become such a consumerist society. Just the other day, my co-worker and I had a brief conversation about what happened to the day when everyone knew their neighbors and knew what was going on- the gossip in the small town sort of feel. Today it seems like we’re locked up in our houses, often afraid to or too busy to talk to our neighbors, let alone strangers.

I’m off on a tangent. Just go ahead and take a look (and listen) to the site.

built communities and McMansions

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

Welcome to the end.

leesburg_caution-signs.jpg

My boyfriend and I drove down to Leesburg, VA back in December and again in February to visit his brother, who just bought a brand new house. This was on the way there. Doesn’t make you want to drive much father does it?

I’ll certainly admit the house was gorgeous inside with tons of space; the thing that urks me is the community that it’s in and all the communities that surround it. Houses are built on old farm land, that’s no longer used. But it seems that now, contractors are just farming houses, not crops.

On the side of the road we constantly pass by signs like this to get visitors in, to see the model homes and neighborhoods.

If there’s really a need for such housing, why not initiate greener buildings? There are so many houses and it doesn’t seem to be slowing. It would be a great opportunity to convert home owners to live in a greener abode…
